The Institute of Spatial Information Processing (IRI) was founded at the University of Ghent by em. Prof. dr. ir. Roland Goossens in 1994. It consists of a multi-disciplinary team of experts from different departments belonging to the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Sciences.

IRI meets the need to integrate spatial information processing both technically and thematically. For this, IRI provides services for consulting research, education and training, supported by an up-to-date
infrastructure. Active research assures the continued state-of-the-art expertise in both fundamental aspects and practical applications.

Fundamental topics include Geographical Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Image Processing, Geostatistics and Cartography. Applications cover Rural Planning, Landscape Analysis, Vegetation Analysis, Soil and Environment Management, and Hydrology and Water Management.
